The Ouray County Historical Society is partnering with the Wright Opera House to provide several educational events to the public! For a $5 fee, you can learn about local mines, archeology, Hollywood films, and more. Each event takes place in the Wright Opera House at 7:30 PM on the below dates right here in Ouray!

July 9th

The event on July 9th features food and education combined. This event will teach the audience about the Idarado Mine. It has an intriguing history, including its restoration and current role in both Telluride and Ouray. Secret Garden Catering will be providing food, so this event is one you don’t want to miss. July 16th

Andrew Gulliford, an author and professor of history, will be speaking about both archaeology sites involving sheep, cairns, and aspen tree carvings. He will provide more in-depth explanations about sheep camps and movements, as well as the various cultures sheepherders still here in Colorado. He will share exciting stories about the sheep and cattle wars from the 19th and 20th centuries.

July 23rd

This event will offer the history of moviemaking in Ouray and the surrounding areas. Presented by Jim Pettengill, this event will enlighten you with behind-the-scenes knowledge on three major movies made right here in Ouray and nearby regions!

July 30th

Don Paulson will be elaborating on interesting artifacts found in abandoned local mining sites during this presentation. Audiences will be able to identify artifacts of all purposes and sizes, as well as gain knowledge on how they were used.

August 6th

There will be a final educational presentation that will be held by author Karen Risch. Risch is part of the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team. She will be going over the various rescues and rescue teams, focusing mainly on the dangers of the Million Dollar Highway.
