Ouray and the surrounding region hold several adventures ripe for the taking. Within less than 2 hours in any direction from the Chalet Inn, dozens of destinations await.
The Black Canyon
Walk the rim or hike one of the many trails that lead into the canyon’s depths. Either way, the scenery is breathtaking. As one of the states’ newest National Parks, the Gunnison River continues to carve the canyon. It reaches one mile deep at its deepest point and over 1,100 feet at the narrowest point.
Whether there’s snow or sun, the Black Canyon has a variety of fun and exciting activities. Try cross country skiing or snowshoeing around the canyon rim during the winter or hike, kayak, raft, or fish during the summer.
The Dallas Divide
Photographers, get your cameras ready. The Dallas Divide is the perfect location for spring and fall photography. If you continue south down some dirt roads, there are even more intimate views of the gorgeous colors and mountains. After the drive, there are many hiking and biking locations nearby.
Colorado National Monument
This location is about two hours from Ouray, but worth the drive. Enjoy elaborate rock structures, canyons, mountains, and valleys. After viewing and photographing, the Monument offers several different hiking and rock climbing opportunities. Whether you are hiking trails that are short and easy or lengthy and more difficult, the views are worth every step. Ride your bike on the road along Rim Rock Drive or on a backcountry trail.
Regardless of the activity, there is a place to stop and picnic for a well-deserved break.
Ridgway State Park
The park also offers winter activities. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking are perfect ways to get out in the snow.
