History of the Fest

The Ouray Ice Festival started when Jeff Lowe, a true pioneer in ice climbing, decided to hold an ice climbing event at the Ouray Ice Park. It started with just a few people, but has since grown to hold thousands of participants. Jeff helped develop climbing techniques, finding great locations, and designing effective tools. Though he passed away earlier this year, he was truly a leading figure in this winter sport!

Ice climbing itself used to be a sport solely for elite climbers, but now, there are several available instructors and guides that can help any average person have the time of their life on the ice!
